EZdrummer 3 vs Superior Drummer 3: Which Should You Buy?

EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3 are not simply “beginner vs professional” versions of the same plugin. Toontrack built them for different stages of the process. EZdrummer 3 is focused on finding grooves, shaping arrangements and keeping songwriting fast. Superior Drummer 3 gives you much more control over the drum recording itself: microphones, bleed, articulations, routing, effects and drum-audio replacement.

My short answer: choose EZdrummer 3 if your main goal is finishing songs. Choose Superior Drummer 3 if you want to produce and mix drums in detail. If you are unsure, EZdrummer is the safer starting point: it costs less, has a 10-day trial, and your EZX libraries can later be used in Superior Drummer 3.

On October 6, 2026, Toontrack lists EZdrummer 3 at $179 and Superior Drummer 3 at $399. Eligible EZdrummer owners can crossgrade to Superior Drummer 3 for $319.

EZdrummer 3 vs Superior Drummer 3: the quick verdict

I would choose EZdrummer 3 for writing. Bandmate can work from audio or MIDI ideas, Tap2Find lets you search for grooves by rhythm and the Song Track makes it easy to build a complete performance without turning every session into a drum-engineering project.

I would choose Superior Drummer 3 for control. You get much deeper access to microphones, bleed, articulations, routing and mixing, plus Tracker for converting recorded drum audio into MIDI.

The expensive option is not automatically the better option. If you mainly use mix-ready presets and never need raw microphone control, Superior can give you more complexity without giving you more useful results.

Why EZdrummer 3 is better for songwriting

EZdrummer 3 drum kit interface and Song Track
EZdrummer 3 keeps the workflow focused on getting from an idea to a complete drum arrangement quickly.

EZdrummer 3 is built around smaller decisions. Choose a kit, find a groove, edit it around the song and continue writing. The core library contains seven kits and about 15 GB of sounds recorded at Hansa Studios by Michael Ilbert.

The biggest unique feature is Bandmate. Give it an audio or MIDI idea and it can suggest rhythms that fit the material. Superior Drummer 3 does not include Bandmate.

My take: this matters more than a larger mixer when the song is still being written. If drums are supposed to support a guitar riff, vocal or chord progression, keeping momentum is often more valuable than having every microphone available.

Why Superior Drummer 3 is better for production

Superior Drummer 3 detailed drum kit and production interface
Superior Drummer 3 gives you access to far more of the underlying drum recording.

Superior Drummer 3 is closer to opening a multitrack drum session. Its core library is over 230 GB and was recorded at Galaxy Studios by George Massenburg. You can work with close microphones, room microphones, bleed, more articulations and detailed sound stacking.

My take: Superior becomes worth the extra money when you can name the limitation you are hitting in EZdrummer. “I want professional drums” is vague. “I need raw mic channels, bleed control, Tracker and SDX libraries” is a real reason to upgrade.

Which sounds better?

Neither is automatically better sounding. EZdrummer 3 is voiced for quick, polished results. Superior Drummer 3 gives you more raw information and more ways to reshape the recording.

The core libraries are also different recordings, not the same samples with features locked. EZdrummer 3 was recorded at Hansa Studios by Michael Ilbert. Superior Drummer 3 was recorded at Galaxy Studios by George Massenburg.

A good EZdrummer preset can fit a song better than a badly mixed Superior kit. Superior's advantage is control, not a guarantee that every preset sounds more expensive.

Mixing: this is where Superior Drummer 3 pulls away

EZdrummer 3 mixer with mix-ready controls
EZdrummer 3 keeps the mixer focused on fast balances and prepared sounds.

EZdrummer 3 has a useful mixer and supports multi-output routing, but the controls are intentionally streamlined around the selected library and preset.

Superior Drummer 3 mixer with microphone channels buses and effects
Superior Drummer 3's mixer is much closer to mixing a full recorded drum session.

Superior Drummer 3 includes 35 effects, flexible buses, sends, microphone channels and bleed control. You can build a detailed drum mix inside the plugin before the signal reaches your DAW.

If you already route every drum to your DAW and use your own processors, the internal mixer is less important. The deeper microphone and articulation data is still the bigger difference.

Grooves, Tap2Find and editing

Both products are strong for MIDI grooves. Both have Tap2Find, groove browsing, editable Song Tracks and detailed note editing. Superior Drummer 3 is not only a mixing tool; you can write a complete drum arrangement in it.

The key songwriting advantage for EZdrummer is Bandmate. The key production advantage for Superior is that once the performance is written, there is far more to edit underneath it.

Tracker is a real reason to choose Superior Drummer 3

Superior Drummer 3 Tracker converting drum audio to MIDI
Tracker converts recorded drum audio into MIDI for replacement or reinforcement.

Tracker lets you import recorded drum tracks, detect the hits and generate MIDI that can trigger Superior sounds. For producers mixing real drum recordings, this is one of the clearest features that EZdrummer does not replace.

If you never receive live drum audio, Tracker may not matter. If drum replacement and reinforcement are part of your work, it can justify Superior by itself.

Which is better for e-drums?

Both support electronic kits, mapping and velocity-response controls. For occasional e-kit recording, EZdrummer 3 is already capable.

Superior Drummer 3 goes deeper with articulations, mappings and dedicated e-drum controls. If your e-kit is your main instrument or you use a large setup, I would choose Superior.

EZX vs SDX: what happens to expansions?

EZdrummer 3 loads EZX libraries. Superior Drummer 3 can load both EZX and SDX libraries.

That means an EZdrummer user can build an EZX collection and later move those libraries into Superior Drummer 3. EZdrummer 3 cannot load SDX libraries.

This makes starting with EZdrummer less risky. You are not throwing away compatible expansion purchases if you later need Superior.

15 GB vs 230+ GB: the storage difference is huge

EZdrummer 3's core library is about 15 GB. Superior Drummer 3's complete core library is over 230 GB.

Superior lets you install the content in stages, so you do not need every room and surround package immediately. Even so, it is a much heavier product to download, store and back up.

My take: the smaller footprint is part of EZdrummer's advantage. If you actively want a lightweight writing tool, more gigabytes are not automatically more value.

Price: is Superior Drummer 3 worth more than twice as much?

On October 6, 2026, Toontrack lists EZdrummer 3 at $179. Superior Drummer 3 is $399 for a new user and $319 as an eligible EZdrummer crossgrade.

BuyerWhat I would choose

Producer who needs mic / bleed controlSuperior Drummer 3
EZdrummer owner hitting real limitationsSuperior Drummer 3 crossgrade
EZdrummer owner who is still happyKeep EZdrummer 3

The question is not whether Superior contains $220 more features. It obviously contains much more data and control. The question is whether those features remove a real limitation in your workflow.

Can you try them before buying?

EZdrummer 3 has a fully functional 10-day trial. Use it on a real song and see whether you enjoy the workflow.

Superior Drummer 3 does not currently have the same full trial available. That makes EZdrummer a sensible entry point for someone who has never used Toontrack's drum workflow before.

Which one should you choose?

Choose EZdrummer 3 if...Choose Superior Drummer 3 if...
You primarily write songsYou need detailed microphone and bleed control
You want Bandmate and faster groove findingYou produce or mix drums professionally
You prefer mix-ready results with fewer technical choicesYou need Tracker for audio-to-MIDI drum replacement
You want a much smaller install and lower entry priceYou use a serious electronic drum setup
You want a 10-day trial before committingYou want SDX libraries and deeper sound design
You value speed over total controlYou enjoy building drum mixes rather than mainly selecting finished presets

Does it make sense to own both?

Yes, but I would not buy both at once. EZdrummer can remain the fast writing tool while Superior handles detailed production. Buy the second product when you can clearly identify the job it will do better.

Final verdict: EZdrummer 3 or Superior Drummer 3?

For most songwriters, start with EZdrummer 3. It is cheaper, easier to learn, includes Bandmate and is fully capable of producing drums for finished releases.

For producers, mixers and serious e-drummers, Superior Drummer 3 is the stronger long-term platform. Its value is not the word “Superior”; it is the raw control over the recording, Tracker, deeper e-drum support and the SDX ecosystem.

The best choice is the one that removes friction from the part of the process you actually do.
